6 month baby well check

At 6 months old, Colton is...

Size:

17. 5 pounds

(he gained 2.3 pounds in 2 months)

28" long

(he grew 1 inch in 2 months)

He's wearing 9 month sized clothes and quickly growing into 12 month pajamas.

Food:
I am nursing Colton & we started feeding him rice cereal and he isn't very fond of it. It is so cute to see his face when he takes a bite of cereal! The rice cereal is still "dessert" or an in between meal snack.

Sleep:

Colton is falling asleep about 8:30 p.m. He then sleeps until about 5:00 a.m. (Yes that's 9 1/2 hours!!) After nursing at 5:00 a.m. he falls back asleep for about 3 more hours and is then awake for the day by 8:30 a.m.

Colton takes between 2 & 3 naps a day: about 10:00 a.m. (1 hr nap), 1:00 p.m. (longest nap=2 hrs usually), and sometimes a nap at 5:00 p.m. (1 hr or less). We can tell Colton is ready for a nap or bedtime based on the time of day or when he gets inconsolable.

His nap time routine is diaper change, read a book, sing a song, pray, then we put him down awake. He will often cry for about 15 minutes, then roll to his tummy, tuck up his knees and fall asleep. The bedtime routine is the same but add a bath. Colton loves the bath! He kicks his feet so much that I have to shield myself with the shower curtain liner to avoid getting completely soaked. He is going to be a water baby when he grows up, I'm sure of it!

The best part is that Colton wakes up happy. He smiles and kicks his feet in happiness when we go in to get him up. I think we all need lessons in waking up that way!

Play Time:

Colton loves to play on his blanket or in his exercaucer. He is getting up on his knees & elbows and rocking himself back and forth, then launching forward. He is also starting to scoot himself backward from all the rocking. He is rolling everywhere, then stopping to kick his legs, then roll some more. Colton doesn't. stop. moving. Ever! He is always kicking his legs (being held, on his back on the carpet, on his belly) and moving his legs. He LOVES to smile and giggle and babble in a loud voice. He's constantly telling us "a story". We love his little baby voice.

Enjoying the exercaucer from his buddy, Caleb! Happy.

All. The. Time.

He is so full of joy; he smiles and giggles all the time & even to strangers! When I was pregnant I prayed and asked God for our son to have dimples. I guess I should have been a bit more specific...because he has the cutest dimples on his elbows. :) Mommy attempting (unsuccessfully) to get a pic of the 2 bottom teeth that have made their appearance in the last 2 weeks.
Colton has a birthmark at the base of his head, on his forehead between his eyebrows, and on the right hand corner of his nose. They are very light, but turn a deeper red when he's upset.
Chewing...
and still chewing... =Cutting Teeth!!

We felt Colton's 1st tooth on his 6 month birthday (Aug. 8). It is on the bottom in front. We found his 2nd tooth a week later; also on the bottom in front. His finger is constantly in his mouth as he gums to relieve some of that teething discomfort. Colton has the bluest eyes! Add those baby-blues to his ultra blond hair. Melt my heart.
Colton's faux hawk is a natural cowlick. Isn't it just adorable?? Colton is into everything that Wes or I do. Especially our cell phones (likes to help us text). Recently he has shown great interest in the remote control and the camera [proof is in the picture of him grabbing for the camera as I tried to take his picture!].
Dearest Bugga Boo,

The past 6 months have been the best of our lives! We look back at pictures of you on the day you were born and it seems like a lifetime ago because we can barely remember our life before you. We are so enamored with you...your funny facial expressions, your strong personality & determination, your contagious joy, and your simple love of life. Being your parents is what God made us to do, because God gave us you.

We love you!

1st Tree Hugging Trip!

Colton's 1st Tree Hugging & Hiking Trip!

We decided to get out of the heat & have one last hooray before the school year started. Wes switched shifts to help out a co-worker which gave him Sunday & Monday off. Saturday morning he had the brilliant idea that we should get out of town for the night. So, we came up with a stay-cation at Mt. Charleston (it's about 1 hr 20 min drive from our house). It was a perfect getaway...about 80* during the day, 56* at night and far enough away that we felt like we had a little vacay. Thanks honey for the great idea! :)

my 2 guys.

Colton started off facing me in the front-pack. We quickly decided to see if he'd like facing out better...and that he did!

{action shots of us hiking}

{introducing the newest, not to mention youngest, member of the T.H.A.!!!!}

[Tree Huggers Association]

We briefly chatted with the nicest people while hiking. Everyone said hi and commented on our cute little hiker. :)

We stayed Sunday night at the Lodge on Mt. Charleston. It was nice...but lesson learned that it's not so easy sharing the same room with a 6 mo that doesn't want to go to bed while the lights are still on and we're watching tv. He just didn't want to miss anything. Needless to say...it was a late night for Mommy & Daddy.

Wes rocked the front-pack on Day 2.

i LOVE my family.

Hiking is so much fun when Mommy and Daddy do all the work!

Bugga Boo would "help" us hike by kicking his feet and legs as we walked. It was adorable!!

until next June...

I am so blessed. In the past 6 months and 2 weeks of our baby's life I have been home all but 4 of those weeks. That's not normal for a full-time mommy, this I know. And I will be forever grateful for this opportunity of being a SAHM (stay at home mom) for this precious gift of time.

Colton was born in February, I took 12 weeks off work (ended up being 13 because spring break was in there), worked for 4 weeks to finish up the school year, and have been on summer vacation ever since. Pretty sweet deal because God's timing is perfect!

So, tomorrow I will put on a brave face as I rise with the sun to get ready for work. Although my heart is incredibly sad that summer is quickly drawing to a close as I write this post; I know that I will rush home immediately after school in anticipation of the giggles and smiles awaiting me. I will choose joy for I know that in this season of life I am to be working full-time outside of our home. I will daily pray for strength to get through my 10th year of teaching. I have the honor of being a wife and mother and I will seek wisdom and guidance from God as I find the balance of being a full-time teacher as well. My heart will be at home with our son, but I will "be strong and immovable. Always work[ing] enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless". (1 Corinthians 15:58)

So, until next June...
when I will celebrate the gift of being home all day, every day with the our sweet bundle of joy.

yum yum...1st rice cereal experience

Colton Dean is 6 months old & that means it's time for rice cereal!!

These pictures tell the story so well. All of his different facial expressions made us laugh so hard--so then Colton would laugh--then he'd make an icky face when the next spoon came again. We had so much fun!

*update...bought new spoons that have a thick coating of rubber on the spoon tip and he likes them a lot! Colton's cereal tonight went super well!

Great Grandpa Irv.

Our trip home was relaxing, fun, and full of quality time with family and friends. As I sat down to blog about our trip, I realize I didn't take all the pictures I wanted to. Sad! I do remember our trip with such a fondness in my heart...knowing that although the camera didn't record all the memories visually-- each hug, smile, story, conversation, and time with family and friends are all recorded in my heart. It brought us such great joy to see our family and friends love and enjoy Colton like we do. I think I was so busy soaking in the moment, that I forgot to snap the photos.
